Fredrikson saved more than $15,000 in vendor costs using Z-Print.

“The ICE software products are no longer an option for litigation support teams, they should be considered “critical applications” for practice support.”

Fredrikson & Byron was founded in Minneapolis in 1948. Since then, they have grown to an international firm of more than 170 attorneys in more than 30 service areas. The firm serves a broad variety of publicly and privately held businesses, financial institutions, municipalities, professional corporations, limited liability companies, nonprofits, trade associations, partnerships, and individuals. Clients include new ventures, small and medium-sized companies, family businesses, and national and international companies traded on world stock exchanges.

Fredrikson & Byron is also a firm dedicated to assisting individuals and nonprofit organizations unable to afford legal services. Their commitment to pro bono work – and community service – is an important part of their identity and philosophy. In fact, Fredrikson was one of the first law firms in the nation to sign up for the ABA’s Law Firm Challenge, which asks large law firms to contribute at least three percent of their total billable hours each year to work for the public good.

Fredrikson offers services to clients worldwide through their offices in Minneapolis, London, and Monterrey, Mexico. While a substantial amount of their work is conducted locally and regionally, they have numerous clients whose business is international in scope. Such clients have come to rely on Fredrikson’s ability to navigate through the sometimes complex channels of the international legal scene. They have become adept at getting up to speed quickly and effectively, and their lawyers have developed a broad network of legal contacts in all parts of the country and around the globe that serve as valuable resources for counsel and information.

Fredrikson & Byron Reduces Costs by Using Z-Print
The thoughtful attention paid to clients and their changing needs often leads to better ways of serving them. True to this commitment, Chad Papenfuss, Litigation Support Administrator, and his litigation support team members, needed a way to process .pst or .nsf files without the assistance of a vendor. “The attorneys pushed back on the cost of extracting the metadata and tiffing. I knew there had to be a better solution.”

To reduce costs, Fredrikson & Byron now uses Z-Print to process small amounts (up to 2GB) of email files in-house and then import to a Summation database for review and production as necessary. “On one project alone, we saved more than $15,000 in vendor costs for our client using ICE’s PreDiscovery™ process.” Using Z-Print for processing email files saves time too. “We were able to process over 575MB of email files and related attachments, netting over 43,000 pages, review and electronically produce the relevant files – all in one day!”

In-House Processing is Critical for Litigation Support
Fredrikson & Byron needed the ability to scan small jobs in-house. The firm purchased a scanner about 8 years ago that was idle for many years. With the purchase of LAW, they were able to resurrect the $30,000 scanner. They are now able to scan small jobs and create export and load files for most litigation support and database software. “The legal teams liked having the flexibility of being able to create export and load files for co-counsel and joint-defense groups in-house.”

The ICE PreDiscovery™ software has provided our law firm with more processing options and related cost-saving opportunities for our clients. With the imminent changes to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure slated for adoption in December of 2006, we are well ahead of the curve in understanding the processing options and putting into play the necessary tools and processing solutions related to electronic discovery files. The ICE software products are no longer an option for litigation support teams, they should be considered “critical applications” for practice support.
