| Norton Utilities 3.0 | Utilities |
Keeping your PC healthy requires regular maintenance. Norton has been making disk
utilities for PC users for years and the most recent version extends the functionality of
an award-winning suite of products. Norton Utilities 3.0 (NU) has extended its troubleshooting services with five new tools. The newest entry in NU is WinDoctor, a tool that scans and fixes problems with Windows 95 and applications. Norton Web Services and LiveUpdate Pro can update your applications and drivers, similar to Oil Change. This Web-based subscription service scans your system and retrieves patches and updates. A free six-month subscription is included with the product. Norton CrashGuard is now included with Norton Utilities. CrashGuard detects crashed or frozen applications and attempts to fix the crash. The AntiFreeze option works to "unfreeze" crashed programs. Last, Symantec has teamed with Iomega on Norton Zip Rescue. This creates a rescue disk on an Iomega Zip disk. Another newcomer to this suite is the Norton AntiVirus Starter Edition. This version detects and cleans viruses and scans your files in the background. Optimization tools are also included to tweak your system for better performance. The Norton Optim-ization Wizard controls the swap file and registry for optimum performance. Another feature added to NU is Norton SpeedStart. This utility loads applications up to twice as fast as they normally would under Windows 95. Symantec claims that it speeds up all your Windows 95 applications. SpeedStart activates when you start a program. Subjective testing showed a decrease in load time for applications. |
