Norton Mobile Essentials

Remote Computing

Mobile computing is clearly in its heyday as evidenced by the sheer number of notebooks used on trains, planes and other locations. Unfortunately, mobile users often need a certain amount of handholding that their employers cannot provide. Enter Norton Mobile Essentials.

This software package consists of three main components: Before You Go, Location Controller and a Connection Doctor. Each of these provides key tools for different aspects of mobile computing. Before You Go is a set of jobs that you should perform before hitting the road: System Check, SpeedSave, Destination and a Checklist. The best in this lot is the SpeedSave where you can quickly backup important files.

The second module, Location Controller, captures key information about your environment wherever you work. For example, you can create an office location that captures information about your network settings, passwords, printers and dial-up networking connections. Select this location when Windows starts and all your settings are implemented -- extremely useful for accessing different networks with different settings. The only shortcoming here is that it cannot modify your Internet access through the network (you must still use Control Panel, In-
ternet) but you can manipulate just about everything else.

The last module, the Connection Doctor, may prove to be the most valuable for neophyte mobile users. Troubleshooting a modem connection can be very challenging, even for experts. This Doctor guides you through several tests to make resolving problems easier. You can even call a remote location to test your system. If a problem is detected, suggestions and details on fixing the problem are provided. If your firm lacks round-the-clock help desk services, this could be a real lifesaver for your firm's notebook users.
