Best Case Bankruptcy 8.0 for Windows

Practice Specific

In the April/May 1999 issue of Law Office Computing, the review of Best Case Bankruptcy for Windows 7.0 was highly favorable, noting the product’s ease of use and extra features. The latest version, 8.0, also gets high marks for its added features.

Among the new features are a spell checker for all text fields and an AddressHelper that automatically fills in the city and state of an address after you enter the street and ZIP code.

The AddressFill feature makes it easier to choose names from your Common Creditor List. To add a common creditor to your list of creditors scheduled for a case, simply type the first few letters of the creditor’s name you want to highlight, and then press Enter to select it. The complete name and address is then filled in for you.

For users more comfortable using the keyboard than a mouse, Version 8.0 contains more keyboard shortcuts for quicker data entry. You can enter, edit and save information, activate buttons and check boxes, navigate through screens, preview forms and print without the mouse.

New to Version 8.0 is the Recent button. It’s always visible at the top of the screen. Just click this button and it opens the last nine client files on which you have worked.

Version 8.0 also contains several excellent features to help with large filings. A client now can give you the names and addresses of creditors as a data file on disk, and you can import this file into a creditor schedule.

The program also has a “Text2csv” utility that works with the import function. You use the Text2csv utility when a client gives you creditor names in a Word or WordPerfect format and you need to convert them into a comma-delimited text format (.csv) to import into the program.

In a voluntary petition, Best Case Bankruptcy also can automatically calculate estimated assets, liabilities and number of creditors, as well as find available funds for unsecured creditors. Automatic calculations are based on the information you enter into the property and creditor schedules.

A Community Property State option has been added to the Setup Menu. This option automatically fills in for the community of the person responsible for each debt in joint cases.

Also, a new Law Comments field has been added to the Schedule C entry screen, which allows you to type in comments that will print on the form.

These new features certainly enhance an already terrific program.

Although Version 8.0 is fairly easy to navigate and use, as was Version 7.0, there is one item that is of concern for new and current users. Be aware, Version 8.0 will not work on Windows 2000, although an upgrade for Windows 2000 is in the works and soon will be delivered.

In any event, if you have never used a software product to automate your bankruptcy practice, or if you don’t like the program you’re using now, Best Case Bankruptcy for Windows, Version 8.0 should be at the top of the list of the software programs you consider.
