CrossEyes, Version 1.0

Word Processing & Suites

CrossEyes, by Levit & James Inc., addresses the single most voiced complaint made by professionals who have switched from Corel WordPerfect to Microsoft Word: “Where are the Reveal Codes?” CrossEyes, Version 1.0, goes a long way toward revealing those dreaded formatting codes and teaches a lot about the way the program works.

CrossEyes opens hidden formatting codes for scrutiny. The installation of CrossEyes is seamless and creates an icon on your Word toolbar.

Clicking the icon opens a window at the bottom of the screen, which shows all formatting in-line with the text. My dream come true — the beauty of WordPerfect’s Reveal Codes inside Word. CrossEyes itself doesn’t require much to learn — it’s an easy program to use, and it teaches you about Word.

The beauty of CrossEyes is not only that you can see the formatting codes, but you also can learn how Word formats documents to begin with.

There are quite a few things to like about this product. Once you master the fundamentals of formatting in Word, made very easy by CrossEyes, you can learn how to change formatting in sections, characters and paragraphs. A click on the particular code brings up that code’s style box. From there, you can modify or delete the appropriate features with ease.

Paragraph formatting, for example, can be deleted by placing the cursor at the code and selecting delete. In doing so, you learn that you have combined two paragraphs, which now have the same formatting as the first. Character formatting, on the other hand, must be modified by opening the actual code. Even better, CrossEyes makes pasting text of various formats into a document much more pleasant, because it’s now possible to locate an aberrant code and fix it instantly.

The one downside is the need to refresh the window in order to see changes in your text and formatting. You either need to hit the refresh button, or the “Shift” key twice. Either way, I think there should be an option for automatic refreshing.

That minor problem aside, CrossEyes is a terrific Word add-on for the user who is reluctantly transferring to Word. It provides the support needed to learn the idiosyncrasies of Word while adding and enhancing a significant feature from a competitive program.
