TimeReporter 3.2

Time & Billing

TimeReporter 3.2 is iambic Inc.’s latest answer to detailed timekeeping for the mobile legal professional. TimeReporter works from within Windows and Palm operating systems. Data can be sent via e-mail or Zip file in a “Time & Expense” format to another TimeReporter database, permitting regular data preservation.

I tested the program on both a PC and Palm IIIC; I could comfortably enter data from either location. I found basic information entry easiest on the PC — client names, addresses, rates, projects and activities. However, in testing time entry, I found my Palm easier to use. The handheld interface is clean; clicking on “New” permits the selection of a new time, expense or auto-log entry. Clicking on “Client” brings your client list up. The same goes for “Projects” and “Activities,” and a new entry from the Palm requires you “Select from List” and add a new item to the appropriate list.

You can enter your time by actual duration or by dragging the pointer over the time bar. You also can turn on a timer or insert a break, and you can run multiple timers.

Data review of TimeReporter’s information on the PC is excellent. You can sort records using four separate filters: client, project, activity and category. You also can have the program present time as money or as time.

There are a few things in the program that require some tweaking. A new entry on the Palm will not translate into dollars on your PC, unless specified; you will still need to enter the rate manually on the PC.

Although the program includes a Microsoft Excel interface, there are limited templates to choose from. Editing those templates requires adequate knowledge of Excel.

More effort than necessary is required to create the client’s bill. Adjusting the filters helped produce more acceptable invoices.

The program doesn’t include a Quicken and QuickBooks Pro integration. The program can be purchased with Timeslips integration.

TimeReporter is currently one of the most thorough mobile timekeeping programs available for both the Palm and Windows operating systems. With its angle interface in both operating systems, TimeReporter will help you keep time swiftly and accurately.
