Norton Ghost 5.0

Utilities

Symantec's Norton Ghost 5.0 (recently purchased from Binary Research Ltd.) is billed as the "ultimate system installer."

Essentially a disk-cloning program, Ghost lets you copy the contents of a disk, or even an individual partition, to a disk image file. That image file can then be used as a template to create multiple copies of the disk.

Ghost Multicast is the flagship product that supports network use. Multicasting refers to the ability of multiple PCs to receive a disk image files simultaneously through one TCP/IP transmission. This template-cloning feature of Ghost has the most benefit in a law firm, particularly in setting up new computers and for upgrading operating systems. You begin by creating a model PC. Load and configure the operating system and then install your firm software: word processor, e-mail, Lexis and Westlaw, Web browser, etc.

Once you're finished, use Ghost to create an image of the disk on your server. When you want to set up a new PC, simply load the disk from the image file and the PC is ready to go. You don't need to prepare the drive beforehand; Ghost will format the drive dynamically, even if the source and target drives are different sizes.

Our firm has used Ghost to image OS/2 servers, Windows 3.1 desktops and, currently, Windows 95 machines in preparation for our Windows 95 firm-wide upgrade. I also recently used Ghost to install a new, larger hard drive on my laptop. I simply ghosted the old drive, plugged in the new drive and loaded the drive image. Ghost prepared the new drive, formatted it correctly and loaded all the files, while I just sat back and watched.

In all these cases, Ghost saved time and trouble.
