Lexis-Nexis (formerly Jurisoft) recently released two new versions of CompareRite, its flagship document comparison software. Version 5.5 works under Windows 3.1, and version 7.0 works under Windows 95 and NT. Both are excellent programs for creating a blacklined version of two documents in seconds.

CompareRite compares two versions of a document to produce a third, blacklined document showing changes between the two original documents. You can select the comparison precision (pinpoint, normal, broad, or source code), wheth-er or not to include notes headers or footers in the comparison, and the ways in which added or deleted text is displayed.

You can use just about any formatting code supported by your word processor to highlight additions or deletions. You can also elect to use symbols, such as a caret, for deletions, or have deletions listed at the end of your document. CompareRite will also prepare a summary of your changes if needed. It will even compare documents from different word processors.

The two new features in version 5.5 are added support for documents containing additional codes created by WordPerfect 7.0 for Windows 3.1x (but only if the document is saved as a WordPerfect 6.x file) and new macros to run from within WordPerfect 6.x and Word 6.0.

Several bugs from earlier versions have been fixed in version 5.5. For example, the [HRow][HPg] or [Tbl Off] [HPg] code combinations in WordPerfect 6.x, as well as not having an [HRt] code at the end of a document, prevented earlier versions of CompareRite from writing the comparison file to disk. These bugs are no longer problems in version 5.5. There were many fixes added for Microsoft Word files as well.

Other new features include support for Windows 95/NT, automatic detection of file formats and an improved user interface. Tables are not yet fully supported in either new version. However, table comparisons are improved from previous versions.

One annoyance in version 7.0 is that you can't seem to minimize CompareRite. There is no minimize button on the main dialog. Therefore, it always remains on your Windows 95 desktop.
