CleanSweep Extra Strength

Utilities

CleanSweep Extra Strength 4.0 from Quarterdeck is a great program for removing software from your Windows 95 system. Although you can use Windows 95's Add/Remove Programs feature, it often doesn't remove all of a program's files from your system. CleanSweep does a much better job, particularly if you let CleanSweep track the original installation.

When you install Quarterdeck's CleanSweep Extra Strength, it adds three components to your Windows system tray: Usage Watch, SmartSweep and Internet Sweep.

Usage Watch tracks how many times files are accessed so that unused files can be deleted. SmartSweep tracks program installations. Internet Sweep tracks plug-ins added to your Internet browser. Any of the options can be turned off if you don't want to use them. I recommend that you at least use SmartSweep when you are installing new software as it makes uninstalling that much easier.

A new feature in CleanSweep 4.0 is Fast & Safe Cleanup. This feature quickly recovers hard disk space by finding and deleting files that are safe to remove, such as temporary files, brow-ser cache files and files in the Windows 95 Recycle Bin.

Another new feature is Quarter-
deck Safe. Safe protects important system files from accidental deletion. You can add a list of files or a list of file types to the Safe.

CleanSweep Extra Strength also includes Zip-It 4.0 to compress files up to 98 percent using ZIP technology. Zip-It is not available in the regular version of CleanSweep.

If you already have a compression program, you should probably just get CleanSweep regular strength and save yourself $20.

Safer than Windows 95's Add/Remove feature.

VERDICT
Buy the Extra Strength version only if you don't have a compression program.
